BORDON, hamlet and army camp in Headley
The medieval form means 'Burdun's valley', where the de Burdon family lived
in the time of Edward III. This surname appears to be from a genuine local place
name, but since there are no other early spellings, it is hard to speculate on
what the name might have meant. The final element was probably 'dun'='hill'; the
first may have been 'bur'='cottage, bower' 'burh'='fort, manor'
'gebur'='peasant' hypothetical 'burg'='burrow', or maybe even 'bord'='board',
perhaps in a sense 'flat topped hill', suitable for the site of Bordon camp, at
least.
